History of the birdhouse
The first birdhouses in Europe go back to the 15th or 16th century and come from Belgium and the Netherlands. At that time, bird houses had a different purpose than today. They were used for the purpose of luring the birds for the eggs. The chicks that were already born were used as food. Back then, bird houses were made of clay, but experiments were also carried out with materials such as wood and branches. These organic materials, however, did not last long in the open air, so the use of small eventually gained the upper hand. Nowadays, bird houses are made of all kinds of materials and they serve precisely to protect the birds and provide a safe shelter.
About American bird houses
In America, the origin of the bird house is with the Indians. These bird houses had a simple structure. They were made from the bark of a birch tree and were equipped with a handy platform as a feeding place. To this day these bird houses are made in the same way by the Indians. These bird houses must protect the birds from storms and natural disasters. In addition, they came in handy in the breeding and propagation of bird species. Nowadays, bird houses in America have all kinds of shapes and sizes, there are even small castles, churches or Victorian houses.
Which birds do you get to your garden?
In this webshop we offer a large selection of bird houses in various colors, shapes and sizes. Are you planning to buy a bird house? Then it is useful to think beforehand whether you prefer a particular type of bird. Would you like to lure redbreasts to your garden, for example? Or do you prefer coal tits, blue tits or sparrows? Each bird house attracts another bird species, so it is advisable to take this into account. Of course at each bird box is indicated for which bird this 'suitable' is. You can also use the filter on the side of the page to select the nest boxes for a specific type of bird.
How do I choose a bird house?
Do you not have a special preference for a particular bird species? Then, when making a choice, you can pay attention to the design, the material and the method of fixing the birdhouse. In this webshop you will not only find wooden bird houses, but also bird houses made of plastic and even earthenware. Furthermore, we indicate in all nest boxes how the design can be characterized. We distinguish three styles: modern, classic and Swedish. The Swedish bird houses look like traditional Swedish cottages and are a playful addition to the garden. The classic bird houses are the nest boxes, as everyone who knows. The nostalgic appearance of these models is good in every garden. Do you like more modern design? Of course you will also find tightly designed birdhouses with a contemporary look at Frank.
Attach a bird house
Birdhouses can be attached in four different ways: on a tree, hanging, on a pole or on the wall. With each nest box is indicated how it can be placed in the garden. Perhaps you already have a place on the eye for your future bird house and it is therefore useful to take into account the way you can confirm this. You can place a bird house on a pole wherever you want, while depending on a hanging model you are dependent on a suitable place to fix it.
The maintenance of bird houses
If you own a bird house, it is important to maintain it properly when the bird has left it permanently. All the superfluous material that the bird has brought in must be removed and you must also ensure that all insects and such are removed. This is important if you want to receive new birds in your birdhouse the following year.
